Laying SMA with PMB 82 E-10

Material Selection

Aggregate Selection: Select angular, durable aggregates to ensure proper stone-on-stone contact. Coarse aggregates must have a high-strength index.

Fine Aggregates: Should complement coarse aggregates, ensuring right gradation for SMA's open-graded structure.

Filler Material: Use stone dust or hydrated lime to improve binder-aggregate adhesion.

PMB 82 E-10 Binder: High-performance polymer-modified bitumen for high-temp stability and elasticity. Binder content typically 5-7%.

Mix Design

Aggregate Gradation: Follow SMA specs. Higher percentage of larger aggregates. VMA around 18-22%.

Binder Optimization: Prepare trial mixes to find Optimum Binder Content (OBC). Ensure good cohesion and rutting resistance.

Performance Testing: DSR tests for viscosity/elasticity and fatigue testing.

Initial Compaction: Begin immediately with vibratory roller to prevent cooling.
